Islem Rekik: Graph Neural Nets for Brain Connectomics
I had a wonderful time speaking on the “AI-ready Healthcare” podcast, co-hosted by Prof Anirban Mukhopadhyay and Henry J. Krumb, this past July.

During the episode, I shared a bit about my career journey, including my moves across continents and cultures—from Japan to Turkey, then to the USA, and now the UK. I also discussed some of the early generative neuroAI models we developed in connectomics, where we model the interactions between different parts of the brain into a graph, known as a connectome.
I felt excited to also talk about our latest research on designing affordable AI models and shared our vision of reforming education on a global scale. This includes teaching students not just how to do, but how to be—creating new holistic curricula that guide us to be consciously human in the age of AI. It is about fostering values, morality, and becoming, as Kierkegaard might say, “philosophers of the heart.”
